Knowledge Exam Requirements for Private Pilot Certificate


Medical Certificate (FAA Advisory Circular AC 68-1A)

  • Minimum of 3rd class medical certificate
  • BasicMed - If a previous medical certificate issued after July 14, 2006 (Review restrictions on operating under BasicMed)


Flight Training Requirements for Private Pilot Certificate

Review your logbook in detail with your flight instructor to verify all requirements are met before your checkride.


  • 40 hours of flight time
  • 20 hours of flight training
  • 10 hours of total solo flight
  • 10 hours of ASEL solo flight (Airplane - Single Engine)
  • 5 hours of solo cross country
  • Solo cross country flight of 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at three points, and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of more than 50 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing location
  • 3 takeoffs and 3 full stop landings solo at a towered airport
  • 3 hours of cross-country flight training in a single-engine airplane
  • 3 hours of night flight training in a single-engine airplane
  • Night cross-country training flight of over 100 nautical miles total distance
  • 10 takeoffs and 10 full stop landings at an airport at night
  • 3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane solely by reference to instruments
  • 3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane within the preceding 2 calendar months (checkride preparation)
