How to become a drone pilot

Becoming a Drone (UAS) Pilot - Part 107

In order to fly your drone under the FAA's Small UAS Rule (Part 107), you must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA. This certificate demonstrates that you understand the regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for safely flying drones.
Checklist:  The complete three-step guide for pilots with a current flight review to become certificated "drone" pilots.

Step 1:  Go to https://www.faasafety.gov and either log in or create an account.

Step 2: Once in that website, find the right course to take.  Try just clicking here:
https://www.faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/CourseLanding.aspx?cID=451

That should take you to the course called, "Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (small UAS) Initial".   Enroll in the course.  It might take two or three hours to take the course, pass the test at the end, and print out or save the completion certificate as a PDF.  It will also be saved on the website.

Step 3: Complete the application on IACRA.  Here are the instructions:

Note:  There is a potential COVID issue.  Part 3 of the ICARA instructions normally requires the applicant and a CFI to be together at a computer.
